A Letter from the Principal:

Dear Friends,

As Principal of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Elementary School, I welcome you to our website!  As you visit our site, may you find the information to be uplifting, as it reflects the enthusiasm that pervades our school environment!  You are invited to come and see us in action when you are in the Highland Park area.

As school personnel, we believe that the only way to fully educate a child is to be in partnership with his/her parent.  We are committed to providing a quality Catholic education permeated by gospel values.  We strive to establish a loving, supportive and caring environment where each child can advance to the personal level of potential that God has planned.

As facilitators of learning, our staff strives to provide varied learning experiences that assist the student to develop the necessary skills to become life long learners and productive citizens of today’s society.  We strive to plant the seed with each child that education is more than a development of self.  Education is the preparation that allows each of us to develop skills which will be shared with our neighbors who walk the journey of life with us in the family, church, civic and global societies of generations to come.  We believe that we must instill in our students a realization that they, too, can make a difference!  May God continue to bless our work here at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Elementary School!

Sincerely,

Sister Georgette Coulombe, O.P., Principal

What is a Library?

Our St. Ignatius library is many things to our students.  It is a information resource, where students can come to complete research assignments.  It is a place to find books to read for study or enjoyment and it is a place where the reader is transported into a world of imagination, information and wonderment.

One of the things Mrs. Aguilar implemented was the Scholastic Alexandria Computerized Catalog System.  All of our books are on this system which enables our children to go online and find their books on the computer.

Mrs. Aguilar has helped our students become avid readers while here at St. Ignatius.  Mrs. Aguilar has formed three different Book Clubs; Anime, 5th Grade and Junior High clubs.  Each group meets once a week during their lunch period to discuss books they have read and one that the club is currently reading. This give the students an opportunity to hone their comprehension and verbal skills while discussing something they love, reading!  Mrs. Aguilar takes these clubs on at least one field trip each year.  Last year they went to the Los Angeles Public Library Downtown.  What a wonderful exposure to the world of books and resources.

The library also has Scholastic “Reading Counts” computer programs that have hundreds of books listed for reading in each age category.  As the child completes the reading assignment he/she is tested on the computer for comprehension. The student is able to see his/her progress as is the parent and teacher.  The student can also be tracked for reading progress from year to year.

There are 2 book fairs every year in the fall and spring which helps bring in new books to our library shelves.

Mrs. Aguilar also has a 1,000 page summer reading program.  Any student who reads 1,000 pages or more and has it verified by his/her parent is entitled to a “Celebration Event” within the first month of school.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3PM-4PM the library is the host of the “Homework Club”.  This is an opportunity for students to go to the library and do their homework under the supervision of one of our teachers.  A great way to do homework and get some extra help if needed.

St. Ignatius library is an active place where the creative mind has a chance to flourish.

Education Through Music

We are happy to announce that this year we will be expanding our music program with Education Through Music-Los Angeles. K,1,2 will begin this year with the study of general music education including rhythm, musical games, movement, and singing. Grades 3, 4, 5 will continue their musical experiences with general music and intrumental instructioin in recorder and writing music. Junior High will begin this year with general music and instruction in guitar. We are excited to be able to bring this progam to our students who will be studying for the third year with Mr. Tim Hagen and beginning this year with Miss Amanda Johnson.

We are happy to introduce the instructors from ETM-LA:

Timothy Hagen (Recorder) is a flutist, composer, and educator who is making waves across America and around the world.  In 2007 he was a semifinalist in the Jeunesses Musicales International Flute Competition in Belgrade, Serbia, as well as the only American invited to compete.  He was also the first flutist to receive the coveted Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship and has received awards from the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition and the Leni Fe Bland Foundation.  In addition to his positions as Principal Flute of the American Youth Symphony and founding member of the Tonoi Ensemble, he maintains a large private flute studio and serves on the teaching artist faculties of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Education Through Music-Los Angeles, and the Arts Council of Long Beach.  His work as a composer was recognized in 2008 with a Meet the Composer grant from MetLife Creative Connections, and he is looking forward to the publication of his AdventurEtudes for young flutists.

Amanda Johnson (Guitar, Chorus, & General Music) is a teaching, performing, and touring musician from Hollywood, California. She graduated from Citrus College where she established connections in the Southern California music community. She has performed internationally with a jazz band and has taken an original rock group on tour throughout the United States. Currently she performs every week with various cover and original bands. For over ten years Ms. Johnson has been teaching guitar, bass, piano and flute to children of all ages.

ETM-LA Giving children hope and success through a well-rounded education, one that includes quality music and arts instructioon.
